River Cruises on the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin Rivers
The Ayeyarwady River (formerly known as the Irrawaddy River) flows through the centre of Myanmar. It is Myanmar’s most important commercial waterway and is about 1,550 km (960 miles) long. It starts in Kachin State, at the confluence of the Mali Hka and Mai Hka rivers. The western Mali Hka branch arises from the end of the southern Himalayas, north of Putao, and is called Nam Kiu in the Shan language. The Ayeyarwady dissects the country from north to south and empties through a nine armed delta into the Indian Ocean. In colonial times, before railways and automobiles, the river was known as the “Road to Mandalay“.
The Chindwin River is the major tributary to the Ayeyarwaddy River and is 750 miles from north to south. It runs through the Chindwin Valley thorugh deep jungles and misty-blue mountains and charming towns and villages, proudly running through a region of abundant natural resources and fertile meadows. This river can only be navigated to the far north during the monsoon season, July to October.
