Mergui Archipelago

Mergui Archipelago

Things to do - general

The Mergui Archipelago which is located on the most southern part of Myanmar which compromised of over 800 islands. Kawthaung (formally known as Victoria Point) is the beginning of our Nature Safaris which is near to the border town Ranong in Thailand, and the distance is about 300km north of Phuket. You are likely to witness the unique significant view which you are unlikely to witness in other part of the world and you will be feeling in the same way as other explorers have felt 2 centuries ago. Majority of the Islands around the area are not inhabitable by people and you can see plenty of lush tropical rain forest down to the extraordinary white sandy beaches and on a few of them, you can also find ancient Mangrove Rivers and caves, which is a very ideal place for sea kayaks and rubber dinghy.

This practically uninhabited wonderland greets visitors with the same pristine natural beauty that enchanted early explorers over 200 years ago. The lush tropical jungle spills down the hills of the countless islands and is separated from the sparkling azure waters by thin ribbons of beautiful white sand, broken only by ancient mangroves and mysterious sea caves. The islands are called home by many exotic species of mammals, reptiles and birds. Mouse-Deer, jungle cats, Armadillos and Monkeys can be seen frolicking in the undergrowth while Burmese pythons and monitor lizards laze in the sun. The bright blue sky teems with the spectacular colours of King Fishers, sea eagles, and rare South-eastern Hornbills.

Our island safari begins at Kawthaung, formally known as Victoria Point, which is close to the Thai border town of Ranong, about 300kms north of Phuket. Our vessel, Sea Gipsy, is the perfect platform to explore this wild paradise offering access to the pristine islands and sea caves via kayak or stand-up paddle board and with amazing coral reefs just a step away and ready to be explored. This area contains many world renowned snorkelling sites containing hard and soft corals and a huge variety of tropical fish and other marine life.

The only full time inhabitants of the area are the almost extinct Moken, or Salone People. Often called ‘Sea Gypsies’ these people live almost exclusively on their boats as they roam the bountiful tropical seas extracting the rich bounty of the sea as hunter-gatherers. You will observe their ways of life, which are in perfect harmony with their aquatic environment and remain unchanged for centuries. Experience paddling a canoe carved by hand from a single tree trunk, and observe their traditional methods of spear-fishing and collecting their foods from the sea floor.

Awaken your inner adventurer, nature lover and romantic as you delve into the heart of this secluded and untouched paradise. Cast yourself back to a time where brave souls set sail for unknown lands and discovered the most breath taking pockets of this earth, and the amazing cultures that already call these places home.

Security

Due to the seclusion of this area there are no problems with security, allowing you to relax completely and enjoy everything the archipelago has to offer.

Permission

To keep the magic of this area alive the government requires travellers to obtain pre-approved permission to visit. We can take care of all the applications necessary, the process usually takes about 15-20 working days, depending on the availability of authorized officials, and a scanned copy of your passport is required for the application. The cost is $100 USD for Kawthaung & Environs and $150 USD for Myeik & Environs. If the trip is to go more than 5 days and 4 nights and additional fee of $20 USD per day is required.

If you wish to continue on and explore more of the area after your cruise and visit destinations such as Yangon, Myleik, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake and Putao and many others this can be arranged through our office. Due to regulation it is very important to mention this to us at the time of booking so we can organise any applicable applications and assist you with dealing with the government officials.

How to get to Mergui Archipelago?

  • Traveling from Yangon / Myanmar
    • If you are already exploring Myanmar then you simply head to the airport in Yangon and take a flight to Kawthaung. This route is serviced by all domestic airlines and there are flights operating year round. The flight consists of three short legs totaling 3 hours travel time, and plane tickets, as well as ground transfers from Kawthaung airport to the departure pier can be organised by our office. Contact our sales department for full details.
  • Traveling from Thailand via Ranong
    • To reach the Mergui Archipelago from Thailand you must cross the border at Ranong. Once you arrive you take a quick boat ride across the river to Kawthaung. Our office can organise a personal pick-up service in Ranong that will organise a boat to cross the river and help with everything related to crossing the border into Myanmar.

How to reach Ranong?

Option 1: From Bangkok
From Bangkok your options are by Air, by bus or by Private car.

  • Flight
    • Flying is perhaps the most convenient option. Spending less time in transit allows more time for enjoying your holiday, and with the very reasonable ticket prices of local airlines this is a great choice. The flight takes one and a half hours from Suvarnaphumi Airport in Bangkok to Ranong, and the route is flown by Nok Air (www.nokair.com). Visit their web sites for the latest flight schedule and ticket prices.
  • Bus
    • Another option is travelling by bus. Buses leave Bangkok’s southern terminal on a regular schedule, and you have the choice of either a VIP sleeper bus which takes 9 hours, or a regular 40 seater bus which takes 10 hours to reach Ranong. Both buses leave the terminal at around 8pm for the overnight trip.
  • Private car/ Mini bus
    • The third option is to hire a private rental car or mini bus for the trip. Vehicles are available from the airport or your hotel, however this option will be expensive unless you are travelling in a large group. The trip takes around 9 hours by car.

From Phuket or Surat Thani

If you are travelling from Phuket or Surat Thani there are no flights available, and you must reach Ranong by road. Luckily it is a short scenic drive of 3-4 hours from Surat Thani or 4-5 hours from Phuket.

  • Bus
    • Bus services leave from both Surat Thani and Phuket bus terminals often and you have the choice of VIP or regular buses.
  • Private car/Mini bus
    • As from Bangkok, private cars and mini buses are available for rental from the Airport and hotels in Phuket and Surat Thani. The shorter travel distance makes this a more viable option than from Bangkok.
The most convenient option when travelling from Phuket is to join the private bus organised by our office. This bus collects guests from various locations around the island between 6 and 6:30 am. It then makes the 4-5 hour journey, stopping for a short break, to Ranong. Once there you will be assisted with acquiring a boat trip across the river, where you will be met by our staff for the final transfer to the departure pier.
